Blue, Jays

Canada has rallied around the Toronto Blue Jays to win the World Series with extra vigour and strength.  The way the US government has backstabbed Canada (with tariffs and threats of annexation) has made this showdown feel personal. Winning the MLB World Series was our chance to stick it to the USA, and even people who don’t usually care about sports cheered on our national team in a show of pride, patriotism and confidence. We all eagerly anticipated taking it all, and the celebrations that would follow.

Then..…it didn’t happen, and the LA Dodgers won the Series.

Canada is heartbroken; we are all blue Jays. But if we take a step back from our disappointment, we’ll realize that we should (and do) also feel pride.

First, the Jays went from the very bottom to the championships. How amazing is that? The last time they were this good was in 1993. They have had a few bursts of success since then, but nothing that has lasted. Then DFL last year, followed by a fantastic comeback this year.

Second, the Americans were predicting a cake walk.  And it was far from that.  It took all seven games, and the Dodgers had to work to win.  We kept playing hard and digging in,  right into extra innings.

Did the Jays make mistakes? Sure. But I’m sure the other side did too, at times.  But no matter what, we kept the pressure on.  And that is what sport, at any level, is about.

I am not idealistic enough to say no hard feelings, or not to feel let down or hearbroken. Emotions are high, much more so than usual, and our heads are still reeling. What I am saying, is not to let our collective blues overshadow the amazing way the Jays soared to the top.
